Giuseppe Alberti created Strega in Benevento in 1860. Its name, meaning witch, draws on the city's legends of nocturnal gatherings around a magical walnut tree. The liqueur's long-established recipe combines around seventy botanicals; documented 1970s bottlings include Florentine iris and mint from Campania.
